Video Games

I didn't know what to put here for the longest time. I knew that I wanted to have a section for video games, since they've always been such a large part of my life. I can remember getting my first video games on an old Magnavox Odyssey 2 that my parent's had. I never found out exactly why they bought it in the first place, because when I found it, it was in a storage shed gathering dust. I only ever had five cartridges for it, but some of them had several games on them, so I probably had a total of nine or ten games. I also managed to borrow and Atari 2600 from my cousin's best friend, and put a lot of milage in that console too. Not only did I have the dubious pleasure of playing the worst game ever made - E.T. - but I played it to completion. I'm not sure if I should be proud of that or not.

Then came my golden age of gaming. In rapid succession - every Christmas, in fact - I aquired an NES, Game Boy, Super NES, and Sega Genesis. These were some of my best friends growing up, my faithful companions. I'd spend hours at a time in my room exploring whole worlds contained on these tiny cartridges.

Now I want to share my love for these gems of retro gaming. Many of these games are beloved classics from my childhood, and some are games that I'm only truly experiencing for the first time. But in an age where gaming done piecemeal through subscriptions, microtransactions, and loot boxes, these games are a refreshing look back at a simpler time.

I'll be focusing on only four game systems: the NES, Super NES, Game Boy (through the Game Boy Color), and the Sega Genesis. When I play these games, I'm at my happiest. This is my happy place, and in a world that is increasingly unhappy, this is a salve for my soul; maybe it will be for someone else as well.
